19th Century French Oil Painting
A lovely depiction of French maritime life at the end of the 19th century. This work is of an ocean-going hybrid steam / sail powered ship that is docked and perhaps being loaded for a voyage at sea, while the French flag flaps in the breeze. This was a time when seaports were bustling: transporting goods and people across the Atlantic and beyond. Before aviation, ocean-going vessels were the only way to move goods on a global scale. Oil on wood board. c.1890.
