19th Century Painting of a Racing Pigeon

19th Century Painting of a Racing Pigeon

A stunning antique painting from 19th century France. The work depicts a single pigeon that has been banded. The pigeon is a racing pigeon. Beginning in England and Belgium during the 19th century, pigeon racing quickly caught on and spread throughout Western Europe. This is where this pigeon is from. In French, below the bird, "Le Gros Plomb" has been written. This translates to "Heavy Lead". Racing pigeons, like racing horses too have names that describe speed and sport. The painting has aged wonderfully, with slightly crackled paint contributing to the patina. Signed by artist. Oil on canvas.
