French 19th Century Louis Philippe Gold Gilt Mirror
A magnificent French Louis Philippe gold gilt mirror, circa 1880. This tall mirror is adorned with a motif of beaded pearls surrounding the mirrored glass. The central motif is striped, while floral etchings can be found in the lower corners. The mirror has a generous amount of red bole substratum, known as "French Red," exposed. This is the surface to which gold leaf is applied when gilting the frame. This exposure is commonplace, and even celebrated by collectors. It is the result of countless dustings over the decades. The mirror retains its original mercury glass, which has some foxing and very few sparkles. A stunning mirror that commands attention.
