Pair of Early 20th Century Kashmir Open Barley Twist Lamp Bases / Candlesticks
Open Barley twist column candlesticks/lamp bases made and hand painted in Kashmir. (in the middle of the Himalayas) "Papier mache coming from the French word, papya masha, meaning molded pulp. Papier mache involves ornamentation in color over smoothed surfaces built up of paper pulp or sometimes wood (in this case) card board or leather. The designs are very intricate, their application requires a great deal of skill and accuracy. Patterns are painted free hand and is unique to Kashmir artisans.
